Name: Cedric Westlen
Gender: Male
Age: 20
Height: 5’ 7”
Weight: 126 lbs
Occupation: Tavern Singer, also waits tables (occasional), cleans (always), bartends (minimal), cooks (minimal), and plays piano(frequently)
Current Residence: Dahngrest, second floor above the tavern he and his father run.
Appearance: Cedric Westlen is an average height male with a somewhat skinny build. He is usually seen smiling by the customers in the tavern he works in but when he’s alone he can become quite depressed. He enjoys dressing in nice looking clothing that are nothing more then a few scraps of older clothes stitched together. Though he has some feminine traits Cedric gives off the air of a calm and dignified young man even though he was raised in the exotic setting of Deseir and then the rowdy ways of Dahngrest where he currently resides. He is usually if not always seen with his hood over his head, hiding his short and some what spikey chocolate brown hair. Usually the only thing most noticeable, beside his blastia, is his green eyes which always connect with another’s during a conversation. Cedric always looks into another’s eyes when he speaks, which can be a good thing or an awkward situation.
His most notable trait is his blastia encasing his neck. Without it he is unable to really speak unless you want to hear fish-like gasps for air that are suppose to be words. The blastia helps convert aer to his injured voice box. The aer acts as a synthetic graft to his damaged voice box allowing him to speak and sing again. With the blastia he has a lower sounding voice with a synthetic tone to it but still can get a high vocal range in singing, not speaking.
Voice Examples:
1) Silly God Disco by GazettE
2) Vortex by GazettE
3) Scissorhands sung by Clear [vocaloid song: Miku Hatsune]
4) Iroha Uta sung by Clear [vocaloid song: Rin Kagamine]
Personality:
In a public situation Cedric is an upstanding gentleman who gives respect where respect is due. When someone crosses him he doles out the right amount of attitude and disrespect. His voice, though powered by a blastia, is the best way for him to express emotion in his singing. Even singing a wordless song is enough for him to convey his feelings. He gives off the air of an upstanding citizen who enjoys the company and comfort of his tavern regulars, singing and playing music for them to ease their minds while serving a warm meal and a good drink.
When Cedric isn’t in the spotlight on stage he’s nothing more then a lonely child in a 20 year old body. With the loss of his beloved mother and his father no longer giving him emotional support, Cedric hides his sorrow and pain from public view. Only by himself or a very, very trusted individual does he show such intimate and raw emotions.
His relations with the guilds in Dahngrest are positive. Various members of the different guilds are considered regulars at the tavern and he has, at times, thrown out some of them for drunken disorderly conduct (Not by himself, he’s too much of a weakling and recruits the other staff members to help him). He also has on occasion done errands for them in passing or delivered meals to sick regulars (cause he’s such a sweeteahrt). His relations with the knights are sub-par. He was never fond of their presence in Dahngrest, but knows they serve a valuable purpose. As long as they respect the tavern, its other patrons and the staff Cedric has no qualm with them individually.
Likes:
Singing: Without singing, Cedric wouldn’t have a way to earn a living and without a living he’d be dead. Plain and simple. When his mother was still alive, she would always sing to him when he was a child before bed or in the morning for him to wake up. When he got a little older he started to join in with his mother, singing along and laughing. Before his voice use to be higher before the accident, with the blastia he now has a more-dark and lower tone when he sings. He loves to sing and fill a room with applause after he’s finished.
When the tavern gets busy Cedric mainly sings upbeat tunes to go with the lively mood. Reminiscent of 1940s Swing and Jazz, Cedric keeps the beat alive and well. Mainly consisting of singing he will occasionally play piano at the same time.
[Ex: Ain't That a Kick in The Head by Dean Martin]
Once everything dies down during the later hours of the night and the wee hours of the morning before closing Cedric turns to Lounge Music. Here he mainly plays piano or sings slow, sultry songs.
[Ex: (I Always Kill) The Things I Love by Claudia Brucken]
Entertaining: When Cedric isn’t singing, he’s entertaining tables inside the tavern he and his father own in Dahngrest. He is usually at the bar helping serve drinks while talking with customers, serving customers their food, or if invited, sitting at their tables for a good chat. He adores attention from others after his mothers passing and his fathers recluse adopted attitude after the event.
Piano: It was the one other skill his late mother had taught him as a child. Since then Cedric has run with the skill, creating his own music used for his singing at the tavern or for those quiet times when everyone is being lulled by their drinks after a good meal. Sometimes he’ll just stare at the piano for a few minutes before actually placing his hands on the keys. Their feel gives him melancholic memories but he enjoys their feeling of power when he starts to play and how they can command the attention of every person who passes by.
Comfort: With his father being a recluse and his mother passed away, Cedric has tried to find a “replacement” in his life to comfort him (in more ways then one). He hopes one day he can find someone else, beside the piano and his singing, who can help ease his mind and accept him regardless of his disability.
Cooking:: Though he is not entirely good at it Cedric is still able to help his father and the other cooks in the back of the tavern when things get really busy. He’s mainly told to make simple soups or salads and sometimes desserts. He isn’t able to prepare things like the main dishes on the menu, but he is slowly learning and finds the experience therapeutic (When he doesn’t burn or cut himself on accident).
Dislikes:
Attention: Cedric dislikes negative attention, mainly to his blastia. As a teenager he was tormented by the others when he lived in Desier, and was once pushed into the oasis during a fight. When he was under the water a taller boy unlatched the blastia from Cedric’s neck leaving him unable to call for help. This distressed him so much that he lashed out at the other boys and girls which resulted in him and his father having to move to another city to escape.
Things being thrown at him: On occasion Cedric will hit a wrong note or will play a song that doesn’t fit everyone’s tastes and sometimes people throw things, mainly the drunk people throw things. He has never enjoyed getting mabo curry stains out of his clothing. Ever. Never will.
Disrespect: When given respect, Cedric gives it back two fold, but when someone disrespects him he will do the same ten fold. Even though he has a disability, he still wishes to be treated the same and finds it greatly disrespectful when someone keeps egging him on about his neck or his orientation or anything in between.
His Father: After his mother passed away his father became a recluse of sorts. Though he operates and owns a tavern in Dahngrest, he is rarely seen chatting with customers or dealing with them on a personal level of trust. Cedric is not entirely fond of his fathers stand-offish attitude and finds it disrespectful to customers. Cedric then took it upon himself to deal with customers, hear their stories and get to know the regulars on a personal basis in his father’s stead.
Being Alone: When the tavern is closed, Cedric is left alone to care for himself and his father. Though his father is able to do minimal things, he usually leaves the brunt of the house hold chores to his son. Cleaning, groceries, expenses and the occasional dinner are left to Cedric whenever his father leaves a note on the kitchen table asking for this or that to be done. Quietly, Cedric does what he is told and hopes one day his father will emerge from his room and tell him what a good job he’s done, otherwise he works silently and alone with his hood draped over his head even lower then normal.
Strengths:
Social Behavior: His mother always taught him to be respectful to everyone, not just his elders. Young or older Cedric his kind and courteous to everyone and always delivers a smile when working.
Singing: Singing (and Piano) are Cedric’s greatest strengths and wouldn’t know what he would do without them. Both traits he inherited and learned from his mother, Cedric holds them close to his heart as the fondest memory triggers of her.
Jack of All Trades: Since he has to do things like cleaning, minimal cooking, bartending, errand runs, waiting tables, singing, piano playing, fixing broken tables/chairs and sewing Cedric is a round about jack of all trades when it comes to someone his age. He isn’t great at everything, but has the minimal to moderate skills to keep the tavern in working condition. In turn he has obtained an iron clad work ethic.
Understanding: Growing up has given Cedric some insight on the pains and tribulations associated with being labeled a “freak” or an “outcast” for being out of the ordinary. With the passing of his mother at a young age and having to care for his father his understanding gives him an advantage in social situations when conversing with people concerning death and family hardships.
Weaknesses:
Controlling Emotions: When he continuously bottles up his feelings Cedric will have those rare moments when he will get agitated or punch a wall from frustration. It hardly happens in public, but when you enter his room you will see the occasional hole in the wall. Its not the most positive way to deal with his pent up emotions, but banging on the piano doesn’t solve anything except bleeding ears.
Cute Guys: This is both vague and concerning. Cedric isn’t entirely open with his sexuality to tavern goers he isn’t familiar with nor even some close regulars because he doesn’t want to get pummeled by all of the manly guilds members. They best definition of a “cute guy” consists of a man that isn’t a muscle head, according to Cedric. And someone not like his father. When a “cute guy” walks into the tavern Cedric can’t help but look from afar and sigh unhappily, thus distracting him from his work.
His Blastia: With it, he is able to sing again and without it he is complete at the command of who ever has it in their possession. Usually lashing out works, but when confronted with someone more calculating Cedric is at their bidding. Thankfully he has not run into anyone like that, yet.
Somehow Cedric is able to use a minimal amount of magic with his blastia. It mainly concerns moving water and has only happened once from an emotional rage-like outburst. Otherwise he's completely harmless.
His Father: Unable to just up and abandon his father, Cedric continues to work diligently for him even though the love is all but diminished. He knows he will get nothing in return, no praise and no admiration for anything he accomplishes and it perplexes Cedric as to how he is still taking care of his father.
History:
Born in the heat of Deseir, Cedric was a happy child growing up. His mother was a kind and beautiful woman from the Capital trying to make it as a court entertainer with her singing. Cedric’s father was a traveler and met and fell in love with his future wife one day when he was buying more supplies in the market. With a single brush of their hands for an apple gel, their eyes met, and it was history from there. Cedric’s father took his new wife to Deseir where they had their son.
Singing was the biggest memory of Cedric’s concerning his mother. She had a beautiful voice that made him feel warm and happy inside. When his mother sang his fathers eyes would light up and a smile would grace his old and worn face.
“No song in the world can compare to my wife’s beautiful voice!” he would proclaim happily and Cedric would follow suit. When Cedric took up singing with his mother, he remembered the look on his father’s face of delight. The rush of wind in Cedric’s hair as his father picked him up for a bear hug was the best feeling. The warmth, the sound of a beating heart, it was bliss for the boy.
Alas, as they say “ignorance is bliss”.
It happened when Cedric was busily playing the piano, his mother in the kitchen and his father traveling the dangerous desert. It was during the time of The Great War. Thankfully neither of his parents were warriors or mages so he was one of the luckier children to still have parents at the time. It was late at night when Cedric heard a noise.
“Mother, what was that?” he asked. His mother replied that it was nothing. Cedric returned to the piano and then started to sing. There was a low thud, the crash of glass, the sound of liquid spilling on the ground and the sound of the piano and a little boy singing. Cedric though maybe his mother dropped some dishes. It was known to happen and he knew she was washing them at that moment. He thought nothing of the situation. Suddenly a dirty hand covered his mouth, a dark and penetrating silence suddenly filled the room. It was quick, Cedric felt nothing. Red splashed onto the white keys of the piano, his mouth produced nothing but gargles and gasps as the hand retreated. The poor boy stumbled from the piano bench, his hands grasping at his neck as he retreated to the kitchen to find his mother. The assailant fled, Cedric was left in utter shock at the sigh of his mother in an ever growing puddle of blood. He blacks out and the next thing he sees is his father, stricken with grief, crying over him in a hospital. His father caressed his cheek then Cedric tried to open his mouth to speak all that came out were gasps a gargle. The look on his father’s face wasn’t as painful as the look Cedric had on his when he realized he couldn’t speak, let alone sing.
Some time later Cedric’s father left him alone in order to travel to Aspio to find his current blastia apparatus, enabling him to speak. Cedric, as a young teenager was quiet, lonesome and getting into fights with some of the orphaned children left alone after the Great War. Unable to call for help he was usually left the loser in the fight, limping or crawling back home where he would bandage his wounds then go to bed without a second though. When his father returned he was elated. His father gave him the blastia by placing it around his neck. It was practically a collar, but Cedric was happy when he spoke his first words in so long. His father wasn’t so elated. No matter what Cedric said his father would look at him unhappily especially when he sang. His childhood was over. The Great War was over.
As a teenager, Cedric got into more fights especially over his blastia. He finally moved away to Dahngrest with his father after his blastia was taken by another boy. Out of a fit of rage and emotional distress of having his life line taken, Cedric lunged at the boy and grabbed the blastia back. The result in emotional anger made a magical reaction occur involving water and an injured party. Cedric was horrified by what he did and regrets it ever since.
Since moving to Dahngrest, Cedric and his father have opened a tavern. Cedric has implemented singing and piano playing as one of the main thrills and cornerstones of the establishment along with its welcoming staff.
