Finally getting around to this. Fffff...
Name: Flynn Scifo Gender: Male Age: 21 Height: 5'9" Weight: 130 lbs
Appearance:
Flynn is a tall and slender man with well-defined muscles and a youthful look that almost seems childish at times. His bright blond hair is short and slightly messy with bangs that fall just short of his eyes in the front and frame his face on the sides, accenting his cerulean eyes. His cheeks are round, making is slender face look rounder, while sharp curves define the curves of his neck and shoulders.
The muscles he acquired through constant training and a busy life-style aren't as bulky as someone might expect or the other knights. His armour, worn on shoulders, arms, and legs, makes him look much bulkier than he really is, hiding away the true size of his figure. Under the metal protection, he's pretty much a twig, and seems far too skinny for someone who moves around and moves as he does.
Personality: First and foremost, Flynn is a gentleman and knight. He respects authority and always uses proper title when speaking to others, and keeps his speech polite and formal. He is gentle, and rarely raises his voice out of anger unless pushed too far, and he will always attempt to calmly talk things out before reaching for his sword. At times his words and actions may seem almost desperate, but if a fight can be avoided, he’ll say and do all he can to avoid shedding blood or causing pain. Outwardly, he is the perfect model of a knight that the empire claims they polish all their knights into. His talents and actions seem flawless to the point of unrealistic fault, but at most, this is a persona and mask he created in order to appease those around him and continue striving toward his goals.
Behind the picture of perfect he tries so hard to display for the people around him, Flynn is actually much meeker than people think. He’s sensitive to the words and thoughts of others, though he rarely shows it to anyone he isn’t close with. He has a constant worry about the world around him and a strong desire to fix any and every problem he stumbles across. This, of course, often causes him to overwork himself, but through the years, and after a great deal of pestering with the people around him, he has come to terms with the fact that he can’t do everything on his own and knows when to ask for help; after all, being commandant doesn’t mean he needs to be invincible, just take charge. However, there are few people he trusts enough to aid him in more serious matters, despite his attempts to trust everyone he meets and give them the benefit of the doubt.
While he doesn’t look it, he’s actually pretty lonely. While he has Sodia and Witcher, his most trusted knights, they are still fellow knights under his command and as commandant, and he feels he is supposed to be the one they go to, not the other way around. It isn’t to say he doesn’t trust them, he does, very much so. They are the only two persons within the knights he’d openly trust with his life, but they are still that. Fellow knights. They met in the knights, and he is constantly torn between the lines of being “professional” and setting aside their duties and simply speaking as people. The only person he ever truly had to confide in (as they were friends before knighthood) left the knights many years ago, and while that hasn’t hindered their friendship in the slightest, it still leaves him without during extended travels or periods of time when they are apart. Unlike Yuri, Flynn is much more awkward when it comes to others on a personal level. He excels in attracting people, but his childhood friend is far better at bonding with others than he could ever hope to be. Flynn almost always keeps his personal feelings to himself, though there are moments when they’ll show themselves if his guard is down.
Likes: Yuri's cooking: As a child, and even growing up, this was pretty much what kept him alive. He never seemed to notice the lethal level of his own which could be a best-seller with Leviathan's Claw if they mass-produced the stuff and was often baffled when Yuri would push him out of the kitchen with a smile and promise that he [Yuri] could manage just fine. Of course, Flynn would always stubbornly insist that they should both do equal amounts, but this usually only allowed him to wield a knife to cut things and hand Chef Lowell whatever he asked for. Sometimes he got to run to the store, where some girl would usually end up giggling a lot and give him a discount he failed to talk her out of. And much to Yuri's pleasure and amusement, sometimes it was a guy.
Reading: While he isn't at the level of "Walking Atlus" like Estellise, he does do a fair amount of reading. As a child, he would read children's books to Yuri before they went to sleep, and when he grew older, those books where then read to other children. Of course, now that he is older children's books are not his first choice, but he'll take to most anything with words and pages you hand to him (though he'd much prefer a good story over basic instruction manuals or "How to..." guides. Fantasy and action-adventure are his favourites).
Cake: Perhaps having a friend who could cook as well as Yuri spoiled him slightly, but he’s very, very fond of cake. Especially strawberry shortcake. He tries to hide this as best he can and rarely allows himself to eat it in the company of others (save for Yuri and perhaps his two most trusted knights). He’ll often turn it down whenever it’s offered it only for the reason that he knows he’ll want another piece, and another, and likely keep wanting another until the cake is gone. And then he’ll need milk to go with it and that involves asking for more than he’s already given and it just makes a big mess.
Training: Ever since he made a certain promise as a child, he’s always looked at his training as something that helps him get closer and closer to that goal. The better he gets and what he does, the more likely he’ll be able to pull through with his hopes and dreams.
Helping Others: Like Yuri, he can never turn down someone in need. The smiles he receives after helping someone or seeing the results of an action providing happiness to others give him no greater pleasure. Too many knights allow this to go undone and he tries to make up for it by overworking himself extending his help to anyone and everyone who needs it.
Dogs: After the cat-incident when he was a child, he took a fond liking to dogs. When he and Yuri were in the knights, the two of them raised a puppy together after its father was killed when he was possessed by a monster. Dogs are also very loyal to their master’s, and he admires them for that. Loyalty is a big thing in Flynn’s book, and dogs definitely have it.
Piano: Because giving him Chopin's outfit was secretly a hint. It's something that keeps his hands busy whenever he needs time to relax. Being commandant is trying on the mind and very stressful, so even in his downtime he feels as if he needs to be doing something. The wide range of notes and melodies it can create give him the liberty to vent out anything that he needs; and for someone as busy as him, he definitely needs something to let him to that. It helps him stay sane.
Dislikes:
Troublemakers: It isn't in his nature to hate anyone without reason, but those who break the rules are more likely to get on Flynn's "bad side" than good. He believes that everyone deserves a chance to defend their actions, right or wrong, but reasoning does not almost condone what has been done. Still, he tries to keep it fair and always listen as best he can. But he really, really does like rules. They are there for a reason and shouldn't be broken.
Yuri's Rebellious Habits: More of a frustration than a dislike. He worries about his friend constantly and always fears that one day the raven is going to get in more trouble than he can handle. It never surprises him to go into the castle's jail and see his friend's face, but that doesn't mean he likes it. While it's nice to have the chance to talk, he'd much rather it was in his room or somewhere else that doesn't have the promise of something illegal behind it. Even if that means dealing with his friend crawling through his window.
Disrespect: No matter who you are, no one deserves to be disrespected. It’s things like disrespect and looking down on others that lead to conflicts like the strained relationship between the guilds and empire. This bothers Flynn a lot, and he often feels if people were just more willing to listen and give each other a chance, there would be a lot less problems. Of course, it this is a very idealist way of thinking and he knows it, but that doesn’t stop him from wishing.
Abusers of Power: This is perhaps one of the few things that will openly set Flynn off. Usually, those who have positions of power were given those positions via voting or some other method in which trust was placed on them. In abusing their power they are betraying that trust, and there is no excuse for that. Using power for personal gain is disturbing at best, but if it causes the suffering of others, it makes it that much work. Growing up in the Lower Quarter showed him that, no matter how trusting a face is, those in power might still abuse it. This was one of the motivating factors that prompted him to join the knights with Yuri; they wanted to change this. People like this are the ones who constantly have him battling with himself on wither or not the path he is taking is the right one. He wants to believe that the law will fairly judge everything, but time and time again he is proven wrong by people like this. It pushes him to try harder and eliminate the fears people have of power abusers.
Failure: Failure is something that can shake him up pretty badly, especially when things seem to be going so well. When the people around him try so hard to get something done, only to have it end poorly, he can’t help but take some of the blame on himself. Like he should have lead better or made smarter choices. Failure usually means that somewhere, something was done “incorrectly” and that really bothers him. He knows and understands well that no one is perfect, but the fear of failing in something that cannot be fixed constantly hangs over his head.
Strengths:
Swordsmanship: For as long as he can remember, the sword has been Flynn's main method of defence. Even when he was still just a child running around the lower quarter with Yuri, the two of them would have mock sword fights to teach themselves better self-defence, train, and keep entertained. Since then he has been trained by the empire in the knights. It's easy to say he knows what he is doing with a sword.
Spell-casting: While he's nowhere near as good as a mage, his skill with artes is enough to keep himself well-prepared. His elemental magic is still at a fairly basic level, but he excels in healing and light-based spells.
Understanding: Listening to those around him has always been a trait that many people found admirable in him. Even if someone speaks out against the side he has belief in, he's more than willing to stop and listen to their views. He'll offer a listening ear to anyone, be it a member of the guilds, worker of the empire, noble, or citizen alike; the more you listen and understand, the better relations between all groups of the world will get along.
Kind-hearted: Growing up in the lower-quarter with his chest friend gave Flynn the advantage of growing up without having the pleasures of material items that allowed him to develop traits such as greed. Seeing others around him who were suffered gave him a kind heart that is always willing to lend a helping hand. Even if someone shuns his outstretched hand, he's always willing to try and offer it again and again whenever someone looks like they are in need. It's impossible for him to turn away from someone who is suffering in front of him and, like Yuri; he'd risk himself without a second thought to save someone.
Studious/Hard worker: Hard work has gotten Flynn where he is today. He has always put forth his best effort into everything he does, and even if he fails, he still pushes forward to do as much as he can. At times, failure can shake him up greatly, even if it wasn't directly his own. This often leaves him baffled at just what went wrong, but he always manages to pick himself up (sometimes it takes a few words from a certain childhood friend) and get back going.
Organized; a good leader: He didn't become commandant for no reason. Since he joined the knights he always worked hard to follow the rules and be a good leader. He knows how to get things done efficiently and quickly. He’s kind to those around him and encourages them to do their best. He offers help whenever he can, yet stays firm to the rules, applying scolding when needed. He tries his best to keep people in-line and will openly tell people when he believes they have acted poorly. Still, despite his scolds, he can sometimes be too gentle with them.
Political Activism: Or that thing this mun can't find a better word/phrase for: While he doesn't agree with everything they do, Flynn is very loyal to the knights and all that they are supposed to stand for. The only person he ever bends this rule for being Yuri. Seriously. He does his best to work for the good of everyone while still remaining true to the beliefs of the knights. At times his passion for trying to find the "right" and "good" thing to do can rival that of Estellise's in terms of naivety, but his heart is usually in the right place. He works hard to extend his hand and use the power he has to change things for the better and actively works to change the empire from within to be a better place for everyone.
Weaknesses:
Oblivious: Flynn is oblivious. There really is no other way of saying it. When it comes to others flirting with him or making advances, he just doesn’t notice. Someone could openly express love to him and he’d sooner take it platonically than think it was meant to be something romantic. Perhaps it is because of this that he doesn’t seem to take the hint from people when he cooks…
Overworks Himself: When the day is done, Flynn is usually exhausted, and then he pushes himself a little more. It isn’t healthy, and is probably one of the reasons he’s so skinny, but he has a hard time seeing when he needs to stop. He takes a lot of things on for himself in hopes of not burdening others (another trait that reflects his best friend) and while he doesn’t charge ahead blindly, he does tend to blindly keep moving without much regard to his health.
Cooking: He can’t. He just… can’t. The very bare basics, such as a sandwich or salad, are usually the best he can manage without somehow creating something that looks as if it belongs in a five-star restaurant, but tastes like some form of edible, medieval torture. Yuri was the cook between the two of them when they were children, and it was usually the raven who would tough-out Flynn’s food and eat it with a forced smile to keep him happy. But yeah… he’s pretty hopeless here. Always will be.
Yuri: Ah, his best friend. The one person who can make him turn around and shout, yet start laughing at the next moment. Yuri is likely the only person he will approach personally and tell to their face that what they are doing is “wrong” and scold before calmly attempting to debate. The raven brings out the best and worst in him; growing up together does that to a person after all. Yuri knows Flynn better than anyone else in the world and reversed it works the same way. Where one can’t reach within themselves, the other can and makes up for it. It’s almost like having two persons made up of halves that make a whole. He doesn’t always agree with the actions Yuri makes, yet even if the other is breaking the law, Flynn still finds a way to make sure that Yuri is safe and alright, even going so far as to turn a blind eye (while acting as if he isn’t) when the law is being broken right in front of him. Despite knowing that this is wrong, and allowing a criminal to slip away could very well cost him his ranking as commandant, he never regrets the choice. Perhaps it’s because Yuri has the courage to do the things he wishes he could but swore he would never do. Somewhere deep inside, as much as he wants to deny it, part of him thinks that allowing Yuri to do what he does when the law cannot reach someone give a justified end. It’s really quite the storm of mixed feelings he has there. But in the end, Yuri is his best friend, his brother, and somehow so much more. There really isn’t a word that properly describes the unusual bond they have.
History: [Let it be known that the admin has not watched the First Strike Movie for a loooong time, so she's more or less BSing the first half of Flynn's history.]
Flynn was born to an average family in the lower quarter. His father was a member of the knights and his mother he has almost no memories of. She died when he was very young, though this didn't at all help him bond with his father. Fainus, as far as Flynn was concerned, spent all his time in the knights but managed to do nothing. Of course, he was young at the time and couldn't understand fully what his father was doing. When his father died, Flynn believed that he left absolutely nothing behind, having no knowledge that the man died to protect many people.
Which brings us to his life in the lower quarter.
Flynn was already used to the hardships that the lower quarter provided, but he had not fully adjusted to managing it on his own. While his father would often be away, at least he had a roof and home to live in. It was a drastic change to go from parents to no parents, and had it not been for meeting Yuri, it is doubtful Flynn would have managed to turn out the way he did. The two bonded almost immediately and were rarely seen without one another once they managed to become friends. Life was hard, but with Yuri at his side, the difficulties Flynn had to face were suddenly a lot easier than he expected. This isn't to say that the lower quarter was a cake walk, but it was better than nothing.
Flynn was barely older than Yuri, though just watching them, many would assume the much gruffer Yuri was older. Flynn had a child-like nature about him and a curious wonder for everything. He had an affinity for attracting women without realizing just what it was they were after. Still, his best friend was always the person he returned to and they helped each other through everything. From food to the first sword they bought together, it was all shared between the two of them. However, the happiness that they made for themselves could do little to erase the world around them. It was very obvious that their lives were not ideal, so the two of them made a promise.
A promise to make people smile; to fight for a better world. To bring happiness to everyone around them. Even if they were hated, even if they followed different paths. No matter what, they were going to pull through.
And thus, the two of them joined the knights together.
Of course, as time passed, Flynn grew much gruffer. His childlike innocence wasn't gone, but he'd definitely managed to earn himself a temper. (Then again, he DID grow up with Yuri). They were still best friends, of course, but constantly at each others throat. Perhaps it was because they cared about each other so much and just wanted to push the other to do their best, but they fought. A lot. Yet they always managed to reconcile and help each other whenever one needed it most. The two of them fighting together was definitely something to see. Both were strong in their own way, almost like two halves to a whole--a very dangerous whole for the enemy.
However, the knights just weren't for Yuri, and after some time fighting together, the raven left, much to Flynn's displeasure. He supported the other, of course, just as he always had. But he was still sad to see his friend go. However, this wasn't about to effect the promise he'd made. Whatever path Yuri planned to follow was fine, Flynn intended to support him... though he didn't quite imagine that the others path would include stumbling upon him in the castle dungeon from time to time.
Since then, Flynn has continued to scale through the ranks in the Imperial Army, earning followers and admirers through his hard work and natural charm (not that he's very good at realising he has this). Eventually, he was finally granted the position of commandant, the leader of the knights, and there he continues to work hard, happily opening his ear and offering a hand to anyone who needs or requests it.
/super special awesome lazy history, gogo!
