Name: Gauche Gender: Female Age: 16 Height: 5’2” Weight: 105 lbs
Appearance: Gauche is a tall and slender female with long legs and arms. Her muscles are well-toned, making her much stronger than she looks. The amount of traveling she does with her sister and adoptive father combined with her acrobatic swordsmanship and marksman training has given her a generous figure. Her small size and shape make it easy for her to move around quickly and jump about the battlefield with ease and perform jumps and twists that would be harder for someone of larger size.
Her hair is a very distinctive auburn with more red in it than brown and eyes of almost the same shade to match. When down, her hair falls to her mid-back, but she is rarely seen without it tied up in a pair of pigtails on the upper-back of her head. She always uses the same green hair-bands and a small sunflower flip to hold her bangs out of her eyes. The outfit she wears looks like something akin to a school-girl uniform with a garter belt on her left leg that carries the Leviathan’s Claw symbol. Unlike her sister’s tendency to take on a “rebellious” appearance, Gauche prefers to look neat and orderly. Her skirt is white instead of black, and her tie is straight and well-kept as opposed to the uneven ribbon Droite uses.
Personality: Unlike her sister, Gauche is very calm and serious and prefers silence to constant noise. She would be perfectly happy curling up in a chair or under a tree with a book as opposed to running around. This isn’t to say she dislikes games or being active, she enjoys exploring around the outdoors very much; just at a much slower pace than Droite. Gauche takes the time to observe everything she passes by and, when given the time and chance, will stop completely to stare at it and think for a while before moving on; a habit which likely contributes to her ability to notice things like traps or oddities that her sister is more likely to pass by in her enthusiastic ways. Though at times this also causes her to completely zone out and miss things like a monster sneaking up behind her or a person walking the same way she is. Calling her oblivious would be the wrong word, when she’s paying attention, her instincts are quite sharp, but once she has zoned out, she tends to drift into her own world until the thought is complete or someone gives her a nice shake to earn her attention.
Whenever she isn’t out with Yeager (or in their "second" home), she’s usually home at the Manor, where a great deal of her time is spent exploring around the house and trying to find secrets she has yet to discover or investing the surrounding woods. More often than not, when she gets the chance to go outside, she will inevitably return with a small (or large) animal and bring it to the house with her bizarre ability to sneak them inside undetected. She’s developed something akin to a small zoo and it’s a miracle she hasn’t been caught… yet. Where she gets all the food is a mystery.
Around the public or those she is not close with, Gauche comes off as aloof and cold. She’s not a cruel person, but she’s very withdrawn. Her emotions rarely take priority over situations or jobs she’s given and they will be locked away tightly until they can be sorted out later. The only real emotions that she expresses when in public would by annoyance and anger. She has no issues in telling someone to their face if she feels they were stupid or did something foolish, even if they’re older than her. However, when it comes to authority—namely those within the guilds, the Empire lesser so—or someone Yeager likes and/or requires for business, she knows when to hold her tongue. This doesn’t stop her from expressing her opinions with brutal honesty later to Droite when they are alone; though she does avoid telling Yeager in hopes of not upsetting him by insulting someone he may respect.
When near people she trusts, while she is still quiet and reserved, Gauche is much more relaxed. She doesn’t try quite as hard to hide her emotions and is more likely to pout or whine a bit if something upsets her. “Brat” is an unfair title to give her, as she isn’t prone to tantrums or anything of the like, but at times she can be rather spoiled—she does have something of a doting father, after all. Still, to Gauche, Yeager’s word is law, and if he says no, though sometimes she may protest and try to persuade him otherwise, whatever he decides in the end is what she will follow. This is a direct contracts to her with other people; if it’s anyone but Yeager, she will stubbornly fight for her views and way, even against her own sister.
While she often scolds Droite for her carefree actions and words, Gauche is very protective of her younger sister. Should anyone threaten or mistreat her sibling, Gauche will step in without a second thought and defend her. Between the two of them, she's actually more violent, though this is likely due to her quick temper. She’ll quickly and easily reprimand the other for acting childish or silly, but at the same time, she loves to be able to laugh and have fun with Droite all the same—at least given that the situation is appropriate for it. It wouldn’t show from her serious and somewhat grave way of approaching things, but one she loves to scheme with her sister. It’s rare that she would agree with a prank that would needlessly hurt someone, but a good laugh always leaves a smile on her face. Random citizens of whatever town they happen to be in and the “grunts” of Leviathan’s Claw (and sometimes the Blood Alliance) are usually their victims, though Gauche tends to take great pleasure in watching her father pester and troll others—namely Kaufman, who she sees as something of a threat—and see how they twitch. The two will sometimes make a game out of who can annoy their victims the most.
Usually their pranks are harmless, but there are times when things have gone too far and they were scolded for their actions. When it comes to scolding, Gauche can easily ignore and cast aside the words of others, but once Yeager starts to (and it’s usually him when they mess with members of the guild) she takes the words completely seriously. She takes the punishments that come with her actions without question, and often tends to go quiet for several days in a row after having got in trouble—but she always manages to bounce back in the end.
Likes: Reading: A good book is always a plus in Gauche’s book. Curling up in front of the fire with her father or under a tree to enjoy the fresh air with a nice novel is a favoured pastime. Sketching: Charcoal and pencils are her favourite tools to use. Paints are too messy and makers smear, but she has quite the talent with a paper and pencil.
Fruit: She loves all types of fruits, likely because many of them have a sweet taste that tend to her sweet tooth when cake can’t be obtained. Her favourites are strawberries and kiwi.
Animals: Self-explanatory; both the cute and somewhat questionable looking, she loves animals. Often times she will sneak them to her room (usually injured ones, but sometimes she just takes a liking to them) in the Manor of the Wicked and tend to them and try to adopt them as pets.
Playing with Hair and Makeup: Perhaps one of her more girlish traits, but she very much enjoys taking hair-clips and ties to her father’s hair to “make him extra cute and pretty.” Usually this consists of her attempting to put his air into small pigtails and braiding his bangs. When this doesn’t work, she settles for simply filing his nails and painting them. Droite is also a target of her little “makeovers,” but she has yet to hear either complain.
Sweets: She loves them. A lot. Her sweet tooth is a bit ridiculous but she controls it well. It’s nearly impossible for her to turn down a sweet treat when it is presented to her, but she’s learned to avoid them when she knows it isn’t a good idea. Her favourite dessert by far is cake—and if you throw some fruit on time, she’s in heaven.
Listening to Yeager play Music: Something that helps her relax whenever she’s stressed or just wishes to enjoy a calm means of passing the time. Her birth parents played music as well, and perhaps it is because of that why she is so fond of Yeager’s playing, but whatever the reason, she always makes it a point to be in the room when he practices.
Flute:It’s a vague memory, but her father used to play the flute every night and she would listen. After he died, her father’s flute was one of the few items she was able to save before being taken to the orphanage and clung to it.
Harp: When she discovered Yeager played something from the string family, she tried to share his enthusiasm by taking up the violin. Alas, the instrument was frustrating for her and much to her dismay, she couldn’t play it properly. A traveling merchant she came across one day was playing a harp to attract people to her stand and she took an interest. The woman happily pulled a second harp from her wares and offered it to Gauche who tried it and quickly grew attached. It wasn’t exactly what she’d hoped for, but it was some form of strings, and a medium of connecting more with her adoptive father.
Yeager: Perhaps the most obvious of likes. He’s the man who saved her and her sister from the hardships of the orphanage and gave them a life again. He was wonderful to them and, in her own opinion, the best father the world could have given her.
Dislikes:
Vegetables: Perhaps it’s somewhat childish, but she hates veggies. Whenever they’re placed in front of her, it takes a great deal of coaxing to make her put them in her mouth. She prefers fruit and thinks that life would be much better without the existence of these terrible things.
Bees: She hates them. Big time. After getting stung by a large bee-like insect that left her bed-ridden for a week with a fever caused by its poison due to a violent allergic reaction, she’s hated them.
Storms and Thunder: Both terrify her. Bad memories of childhood and the war that stole her parents away surface when a storm rolls around.
People with Too Much Energy: Yeager is the only person who seems to slip past this rule, and even then, it’s because he’s less-so hyper and more charismatic. Her sister is tolerated, as Droite is family and your family is family… but when it’s not one of those two, she can’t handle high-amounts of energy well. Especially if it’s a large group of hyper persons.
Zagi: See the above dislike for main reasoning. …Yet somehow, he’s also one of her favourite “playthings” as well.
Alexei: …What is there to like?
Kaufman: It isn’t that the woman did anything to upset her, Gauche just sees her as a threat. Yeager seems to take far too much pleasure in tormenting the woman and she is under the impression that the female guild-leader is going to take her father away from her.
Strengths:
Baking: Gauche isn’t the best when it comes to cooking, but she’s very talented with desserts. From the basic cake to complicated pastries, she can make beautiful sugary assortments to enjoy. It’s a trade she’s practiced since she was small and developed into something impressive. Her cakes and pastries are beautiful with elegant designs and colourful frosting and a inviting aroma to go with them.
Puzzles: Every since she was small, she always loved to explore and learn. Her ability to solve problems and puzzles is remarkable. Despite her tendency to zone out while thinking, her thoughts while doing so are always worth the wait and time.
Reading People: She’s good at watching an observing people. Her patience and dedication to the art has developed into something very useful for detecting lies and reading the emotions people attempt to hide behind a mask. She’s by no means a detective, but the ability can be very useful, especially when dealing with other guild members at the knights.
Acrobatics: Her slender frame and light-body allow her to move quickly and swiftly. She’s flexible and bouncy and can dance across a battle field with ease, pulling off high-jumps and strange flips that are very graceful for someone as young as she is.
Fighting: Look at her father. It’s natural that she’d have an affinity for knowing how to defend herself and make use of unique weapons. Of course, she’s still young and not the strongest person out there, but her weapons training combined with her acrobatic talent males her a challenging foe.
Weaknesses:
People: While she is good at reading people, she is not good at dealing with them. There are a select few that Gauche legitimately enjoys being around, and the rest she retains a feeling of indifference around. While she wouldn't let someone die right in front of her, she also isn't the type to openly care for them or share emotions. She walks a razors edge in that sense; while part of her holds a strong motherly and sisterly instinct to help, the bitterness she holds toward the world puts a wall between herself and others.
Cooking: She can manage the basics—like sandwiches, salad, and soup—but when it comes to more complicated things like meat-dinners or stews, she tends to be at a loss. This isn’t to say she makes edible death like a certain commandant, but her meals are sub-par at best. Gauche really does try her best to make dinners and lunch, but happily, she has her father and sister to back her up and make sure she has something to eat that isn’t an insult to her stomach. Besides, she’s only set the kitchen on fire twice. The third time totally wasn’t her fault.
Storms: Ever since the great war, something about them has always terrified Gauche. Add some thunder and lighting and she’ll want nothing more than to curl up in a corner and hide under a blanket. Often times when they would pass over the orphanage she would hide inside one of the cabinets with her hands over her head and knees pulled up to her chest as she tried to keep from crying and wait for the storm to pass. After Yeager adopted Gauche and her sister, she abandoned the cabinet in favour of curling up with a blanket beside her father’s bed, not quite brave enough to sneak under the covers. (Though she’s usually noticed shortly after making it into the room and pulled into a hug of comfort.) However, if asked, she’d never, ever admit to this.
Yeager: For obvious reasons. Yeager is the most important person in her life aside from her sister. The man is her saviour, father, and even her “first love.” There is nothing she would not do or sacrifice for the man. If her life needed to be laid down to save it, so be it; whatever it takes to ensure Yeager’s safety and happiness. He’s the only person she will listen to without question, and while she has moments of rebellion against him, in the end, his word still remains her law.
Droite: He beloved younger sister. Like with Yeager, there is little she would not do for Droite. She has always been somewhat overly protective of her younger sister’s safety and has her sister’s best interests in mind. Her younger sibling has also been the only constant in her life. She is the only person in the world who has ALWAYS been there, and while she adores her adoptive father to no end, there is no one else in the world who knows her or she knows better than her sister. They’re never apart, and when things get tough, Gauche knows she can always count on her.
History: Gauche was born into a perfectly normal and happy family. They were of comfortable wealth—neither rich nor poor—and could easily afford everything they both needed and wanted. Her mother and father loved her dearly and made sure she was always happy and healthy, while still keeping to a strict set of rules in hopes of giving her a balanced life. Reprimanding her was never physical, but when the rules were broken, a fair punishment was decided and followed through with. Her father would often spend long hours away from the house attending to his duties as a knight in order to allow his wife to work less and stay home with their daughter, but he always made time for her, even when exhausted.
When Gauche was two years old, her mother became pregnant and was granted an extended stay at home from work. This made Gauche very happy; now her mother was always home and could play games with her whenever she wanted. Alas, toward the end of the pregnancy, her mother could play less and less, and while this left her quite lonely, the promise of a new baby sister gave her excitement. When Droite was finally born, Gauche spent most of her time following the small baby wherever she went. From feeding to nap time, she’d watch curiously as she tried to understand the meaning behind the small human. She couldn’t quite comprehend that she’d been that small at first, or why her parents were suddenly giving this new girl most of their attention.
At first she very much resented the baby for this, but one afternoon when her mother was napping and her father was away, Droite started crying. Her mother was very tired from tending to the baby all morning and didn’t wake up, so Gauche approached the sobbing child with a frown. She really, really didn’t like the racket that she was making. It was annoying. Her intent had been to poke and prod the baby until it stopped, but the moment her finger got close, her sister grabbed onto it and the tears stopped. It had taken Gauche a few moments to realise what had happened before she tried to pull the finger back. It wouldn’t budge. The strength of the baby amazed her and a few seconds later her sister’s eyes opened and it was sometime around that moment that part of Gauche’s heart melted and the hate she’d been harbouring for the past few months vanished.
From there on Grauche’s life returned to its happy normality. While she was barely more than two, she happily helped her parents as best as she could (which usually consisted of handing them things when they asked) and embraced the idea of having a younger sibling. The older they grew, the more protective of her younger sibling she got. Most of her scolds were purely out of love and Droite’s best interests, and it was rare that she ever went anywhere without encouraging her sister to follow along. It really seemed as if nothing could possibly go wrong. Life was awesome.
And then the Great War came.
Gauche was only five when their parents were recruited to fight, and like most children she didn’t understand. Things had been so happy and fun, and suddenly her parents were just gone. They didn’t come home anymore. She couldn’t understand, and despite the best efforts of the people she had been left under the care of, she refused to believe what they said. As far as her little mind could understand, they’d been abandoned by the people who were supposed to love them most. Their caretakers tried their best to assure the young girls that this wasn’t the cause, but the efforts were in vain. Their mother had promised Gauche they would return “soon,” but soon never came and soon after the news of their parents death reached them. This only confused the young girl more and left her feeling even more lost. Their parents were just gone and never coming back.
By the time they’d been brought to the orphanage after salvaging the bare minimum of their belongings, her faith in the world had been all but shattered. Droite, as far as Gauche knew, was too young to even realise what was happening and in turn making Gauche all the more protective of her. It was her responsibility to be the mommy and daddy now. As long as Droite stayed happy, at least something would come of all this. For almost four years, that’s how it remained. Too young to escape the clutches of the orphanage system, that’s where they remained. It wasn’t an ideal situation at all, but it was all they had. Meals were meagre and there was little for them there. Multiple times Gauche tried to escape with her sister, but it never worked. Just as she was prepared to give up completely, a sudden stranger came into their life and changed everything.
A tall and handsome man came to the orphanage and donated a large and helpful sum of money. Something about him immediately attracted Gauche’s attention and she began to watch him. His actions made no sense to her at all. He was kind and funny, and not at all what she was used to, and soon after introduced himself to them as Yeager. Yeager’s visits became something she always looked forward to, and the fact that he actually paid the two of them mind thrilled her. Gauche became completely enamoured with him, and somewhere along the line a strong case of “puppy-love” had formed. She adored him; every time he said he’d come back he would, and slowly, her faith in the world was restored. The day he approached them and claimed they were coming home with them, that he’d adopted them, was the happiest of Gauche’s life. In her eyes, he was their “saviour” and the best man in the world. Not more than a few months after he’d welcome them into his home, Gauche happily proclaimed: “When I grow up, I’m going to be your wife!”
Of course, this never happened, and while the lingering feelings of romance for him haven’t completely faded away, Gauche has accepted that Yeager is her father and guardian. It is perhaps because of this that she feels a dislike for anyone who grows close enough to the man to pose a threat, but no matter what happens, she happily followed the man loyally with her sister at her side. Over time, Gauche’s long-standing grudge against her birth parents faded and after learning the truths about the Great War, guilt began to take place of the hate. After confessing all this to her adoptive father, the family took on a quest to find the graves of the girl’s parents.
Through hard work, namely on Yeager’s part, they found what they were looking for and visited the graves. The visit worked wonders for Gauche’s mental state and she was finally able to move on with her life, happily clinging tightly to the new family she had formed and still lives with today.
Did you read the rules? I am using my powers of administration to not answer this question. Why? Because that’s just how I roll.
