Name: Harry Whitehorse
Gender: male
Age: 16
Height: probably around 5'5"
Weight: 2.5 Karols
Appearance:
Likes:
-being cool and heroic (this does not happen as often as he would like)
-Altosk (it is the coolest guild ever!)
-cute girls (even though they make Harry nervous)
-card games (having grown up around sketchy guildsmen, Harry has learned how to be pretty good at this sort of thing)
Dislikes:
-being told what to do (he is a rebellious teen, you can't control him!!!)
-suits (they are uncomfortable and dumb)
-Imperial Knights (they are also dumb!!)
-being treated like a kid
Strengths:
-Despite all the trouble he indirectly ends up causing (including the death of his grandfather!) Harry has a good heart. He really does want to help people and be a good leader like his grandfather. And he does understand that sometimes you have to bend the rules a bit to do what's right. (an example would be when he gives the party Belius's apatheia even though no one was supposed to take it until the Don's replacement had been confirmed.)
-Harry is very trusting of people as well. This does sometimes backfire on him, for instance when he doesn't question information received from a shady guild like Leviathan's Claw. But mostly it's a good thing. In particular, somewhat surprisingly, he seems to trust Raven, as seen when he holds Nan back from stopping the party from entering the coliseum because, as he says, "Raven is with them."
-Harry can use a sword! Of course being the Don's grandson, Harry has to be able to defend himself! He clearly knows quite a bit about proper form and the like, as he helps Karol work on improving his technique in a sidequest where he lets Karol borrow the Don's sword for practice.
Weaknesses:
-Harry is very impulsive and rash. He acts without thinking too hard about it, which of course often have unintended consequences. He brings an attack on the coliseum based on false information, which almost throws the two largest guild powers into a war. This recklessness is not uncommon for his age, unfortunately thanks to his position in the guilds he has far less room to make mistakes than the average teenager.
-He sulks! So basically the winning combination of the stereotypical teenager! He does something stupid, messes up, and then sulks about it. Because no one understands how hard it is to be him, since they're never been a teenager before GOSH. Eventually he DOES realize that yeah he's being stupid (pretty much at the point where an 11 year old showed more bravery and clarity of thought than the entire guild union.) but before that trying to talk to him is pretty much like trying to engage a brick wall.
-And of course he's sulking because once again he's proved (in his mind) that he can't live up to the Don's legacy. He's very unsure of himself, but tries to cover for that by trying incredibly hard to be helpful and do things. He's convinced he'll never be as good a leader as the Don. Which he probably won't, but such a thing would likely be an unrealistic goal for ANYONE, and Harry doesn't seem to realize that he doesn't have to be the same leader his grandfather was.
Personality: Harry often comes off as rude. Sometimes he really is being rude, and he knows it. Most times though he's just speaking without thinking what he's saying beforehand, especially when he gets worked up over something. Unfortunately he does seem to be a very a emotional person, so getting him worked up is not at all difficult. This results in Harry saying and doing a lot of things that he doesn't really mean and he ends up regretting having said them later.
Harry is at that age where he wants to be treated like an adult, but is still getting used to actually acting like one. At the same time he feels forced to grow up quickly so that he can inherit the Don's position as head of Altosk. He does have his moments of maturity, but for the most part, to put it simply, Harry is a brat. He whines a lot, annoys people, and just acts generally juvenile. He's been known to sulk and brood over things. He also doesn't like to let other people see him cry (or blush for that matter), because he thinks that as a man (and the heir to Altosk), he has to appear tough at all times, not that he does that very well anyway, and thus tries his best to mask any unmanly emotions such as those.
While he may not be entirely justified in this regard, Harry doesn't feel like he has a lot of control over the things around him or his own life, for that matter, and that bothers him to no end. In part this is because of how his future has basically been laid out for him, but despite that no one trusts him to do anything important. Really, Harry does mean well most of the time. He actually tries pretty damn hard to be a strong, productive member of Altosk (true to the guild laws), but his tendency to 'act now, ask questions later', can often lead to his good intentions backfiring and causing more problems than they solve. Add to that the fact that Harry is at least a little naive, and you can see why Harry really doesn't mean to cause all the trouble that he does.
History: Harry lost both of his parents fairly early on in his life, and thus grew up raised by his grandfather in Dahngrest, the city of guilds. The guilds were established for people who did not want to live in the empire due to it's policies. Once you left the empire (which all citizens were free to do), the empire had no control over you but they also did not have to protect you either. And with monsters running rampant outside of empire controlled cities, the guilds were founded to shelter people. Harry's grandfather, Don Whitehorse played a large part in founding the city of Dahngrest, as well as the most influential guild, Altosk. The city is governed by the Guild Union, with the Don as it's leader. The union is what it sounds like, it is several guilds who are affiliated with each other and work together. Most of the power lies in the hands of the five "master guilds" of the union, especially Altosk.
Harry is first encountered in the game when the party is in Nordopolica to talk to Belius. The Hunting Blades show up to take down the "monster" that has the Duce (leader) of Pallestralle, the guild that runs the Colliseum and in effect, the town itself, Belius. However in fact this "monster" is Belius herself. As it turns out, The Hunting Blades were told this and brought there by the Don's grandson, Harry. When the party comes ot intervene, they almost get into a scuffle with Nan, one of the Hunting Blades members, but Harry stops her, saying that if Raven is with them, they're not enemies. The ensuing chaos results in Belius being killed, the entire city is up in arms and even the knights are getting involved. The party narrowly escapes on their boat, with Harry in tow. Harry reveals that he was given the false information by another guild, Leviathan's Claw, and wanting to prove his worth, acts in earnest. He feels guilty for the whole spectacle, and well, like a huge idiot. Which Raven tells him in no few words is kind of true. Harry then just sort of sulks for the rest of the trip back to Dahngrest.
Eventually members of Pallestralle come looking for blood, and the blame falls to Harry for Belius's death. However the Don, refuses to have any of that, and says he'll give his own life in place of Harry's. Harry is of course distraught by this but can't do anything to change his grandfather's mind. Following the Don's death, Harry is the implied successor, but claims he doesn't want to be the next leader of Altosk. The party leaves the city of Dahngrest in a state of immense disarray. On their next trip there, the party is seeking to obtain Belius's apatheia, which had been in the possession of the Don. Apparently now only the true successor to the Don is allowed to access it, and it's currently locked away in the guild HQ since no one has stepped in to be the new Don yet. Harry, the presumed heir, doesn't seem to feel like he's up to the job. He claims that it is his fault that the Don is dead after all, and that he could never live up to what the Don was. In other words, he feels guilty for indirectly causing the Don's death and is afraid he won't be able to live up to the Don's legacy. The Don gave his life for the sake of Harry's, which would understandably pressure Harry to try to be a great leader to honor the Don's memory. But with the Don being such a beloved and legendary figure in Dahngrest, taking his place is understandably a daunting task. As the party starts to leave the city empty handed, Harry shows up and gives them the apatheia, when questioned he says that it was "stolen" so they better leave quick before people start looking for it.
